The expansion didn’t just tweak a few numbers or introduce a handful of new affixes. It completely reshaped how players think about offensive power, crafting, and endgame optimization.
For many players, the new systems initially felt confusing. Damage numbers exploded, multipliers became harder to track, and previously “must-have” stats suddenly lost value compared to others. But after weeks of testing, theorycrafting, and pushing endgame content, the community now has a much clearer understanding of how the new offensive systems truly work.
This guide breaks down the modern damage formula in Diablo 4, explains why additive and multiplicative stats behave differently, and explores how to craft truly elite gear in the current meta.
Understanding the Foundation of Damage
Every offensive calculation in Diablo 4 begins with one simple value: weapon damage.
Your weapon’s base damage acts as the starting point for virtually every attack in the game. The new weapon damage affixes introduced with the expansion further amplify this value, making weapon quality more important than ever before.
From there, skill ranks dramatically scale that base number. If you are using a heavily invested skill like Apocalypse at Rank 28, the multiplier attached to those skill ranks becomes enormous. High-rank core abilities now contribute a much larger portion of total damage than they did before the rework.
After weapon damage and skill scaling comes another critical multiplier: your main stat.
Each class benefits from a different primary attribute, and these stats now function as their own separate multiplicative layer. Hovering over your main stat reveals how much additional skill damage it provides. The more you stack it, the stronger every offensive action becomes.
This means that raw attribute stacking is no longer just a secondary optimization strategy. Main stats are now one of the cleanest and most reliable ways to scale overall damage output.
Why Attack Speed Is Secretly One of the Best Stats
One of the most misunderstood offensive stats in Diablo 4 Gold right now is attack speed.
Players often focus entirely on larger critical hits while ignoring how frequently those hits occur. But attack speed effectively acts as another damage multiplier because faster attacks mean more damage instances over time.
However, attack speed comes with an important caveat: frame breakpoints.
Animations in Diablo 4 operate on frame intervals. If an attack animation takes 10 frames, increasing attack speed slightly may not actually improve performance unless you reach the threshold required to reduce the animation to 9 frames.
This creates invisible breakpoints for every skill in the game.
Some builds gain massive benefits from reaching specific attack speed thresholds, while others see almost no noticeable improvement until much later investment points. Because each skill behaves differently, optimizing attack speed often requires build-specific testing rather than simply stacking the stat blindly.
Still, for most endgame builds, attack speed remains one of the strongest offensive stats available.
Additive Damage: Bigger Numbers Matter Most
One of the largest sources of confusion after the expansion revolves around additive damage bonuses.
Most offensive tempers, Paragon bonuses, and conditional damage increases are additive. These affixes are identified by the “+” symbol on their descriptions.
The important thing to understand is that additive bonuses all merge together into one giant pool.
For example:
+50% Fire Damage
+50% Critical Strike Damage
+50% Vulnerable Damage
If an attack qualifies for all three conditions, they combine into a single +150% additive bonus before being applied to your damage formula.
This is why spreading additive stats evenly is often unnecessary.
Players sometimes assume they should diversify additive bonuses across many categories, but that usually provides no special advantage. Instead, the best additive affixes are simply the ones with the highest values that consistently apply to your build.
For critical strike builds with high crit chance, Critical Strike Damage is usually best because it rolls extremely high.
For Overpower builds, additive bonuses tied to Overpower stacks become incredibly valuable because their numbers scale aggressively.

For additive stats, prioritize the biggest numbers that apply consistently to your damage.
The Biggest Misconception About Critical Damage
One of the most misleading aspects of Diablo 4’s stat screen is how it displays critical damage.
The UI combines additive critical damage and critical damage multipliers into one presentation, which causes many players to misunderstand how the system actually works.
Critical Damage Multiplier is not multiplying your additive critical damage pool.
Instead, it acts as a separate multiplier applied to the entire hit if the attack crits.
The same applies to Vulnerable Damage Multiplier.
This distinction is extremely important because it changes how you should build gear.
A +50% additive crit damage affix is functionally identical to +50% additive vulnerable damage if the attack both crits and hits a vulnerable enemy. They simply join the same additive pool.
